Question 1

What composting toilet works best in cold climates in Canada?

Accepted Answer

The Excel Electric and Centrex 2000 are best — their thermostatically-controlled heaters keep the chamber active in low temperatures. For non-electric, the Centrex 2000 NE works well in an insulated, frost-free space.

Question 2

Do composting toilets smell?

Accepted Answer

Not when properly installed. Sun-Mar's vented fan system creates negative air pressure — odours are pulled away and vented outside. Most users report zero noticeable smell with correct venting and regular bulking material.

Question 3

Can you use a composting toilet in winter in Canada?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The unit must stay above 13°C for active composting. Electric models handle this automatically. Non-electric models need an insulated space. Unoccupied cabins can use it as a holding tank through winter.

Question 4

How often do you need to empty a composting toilet?

Accepted Answer

Seasonal use: Centrex models typically need emptying once a year in spring. Self-contained models like the Excel may need emptying 2–3 times per season. Output is dry, soil-like compost safe for garden use.

Question 5

Is a composting toilet legal in Canada?

Accepted Answer

Yes. All Sun-Mar models are NSF/ANSI Standard 41 certified — the recognized North American performance standard. Most Canadian provinces accept certified units as an approved alternative to traditional septic systems.

Question 6

Do I need a plumber to install a composting toilet?

Accepted Answer

No plumbing required. Self-contained models ship fully assembled — plug in and attach the vent stack. Centrex systems need positioning below the toilet and a drain hose connection, but no water hookup is needed.
